WORLD OF WONDER (2007)

The debutante puts down her glass and looks out across the lake
Staring at the woods that sit at the edge of the estate
A movement at the water’s edge and a pair of glowing eyes
Matted fur and taffeta and a moment of surprise

Nature walks beside us and whispers in our ear
There are mysteries at the edge of the frontier
We all hear the thunder
Helpless to explain
Why we can’t stop the rain
In a world of wonder
That waits just out of our reach

The taxi driver says good night as the city greet the dawn
Opens his apartment window and watches life grind on
Sees a nest atop a tree, and he hears the hungry chicks
Waiting in their bed of twigs only inches from the bricks

Nature keeps us close as we run our little race
Wraps around our lives in an ageless** embrace
We all hear the thunder
Helpless to explain
Why we can’t stop the rain
In a world of wonder
That waits just out of our reach

Blades of grass break through the sidewalk
Tides come rolling in the bay
The world keeps dropping hints
But when we catch a glimpse
We look the other way

Nature keeps us close as we run our little race
Wraps around our lives in an ageless embrace
We all hear the thunder
Helpless to explain
Why we can’t stop the rain
In a world of wonder
That waits just out of our reach

Another successful collaboration with Ian Ferrin. Ian had a melody (verse and chorus) and I had to find a lyric that fit.

Once I had the image of the debutante in my mind, she wouldn’t go away. That image of the society girl on the edge of the wildness of nature pushed me into the lyric.
