JULIET (2009)

VERSION 1

Seven stories up
High enough to pour
Honey in my ear
High enough to see
Blood run through my veins
High enough to jump
Thinking you can fly
Breathing smoke with every sigh

You’re driving me insane

JULIET
Why won’t you come on down
You’re so high
JULIET
Come down
I’m on the ground
You’re so high

So I spend my days
With the windows shut
With the curtains drawn
With the lamps turned off
Artificial night
Crying in the dark
Glowing in my dreams
Seven stories up it gleams

She kills the moon with light

JULIET
Why won’t you come on down
You’re so high
JULIET
Come down
I’m on the ground
You’re so high

VERSION 2

You want to take a sip
Water in the desert
But you let it lie
Poison in the moonlight
Rosemary and rye
Nightengale sings of
Rememberance and rue
And everything reminding you
Of
Something you will never love

Juliet
Why don’t you try again
Don’t stop now
Juliet
I know
You can’t forget
Don’t stop now

Maybe you don’t want
Any anesthetic
Kindness can be cruel
Mandrakes in the garden
Screaming when you pull
You found an apothecary open late
I know why you hesitate
So
Something you will never know

Juliet
Why don’t you try again
Don’t stop now
Juliet
I know
You can’t forget
Don’t stop now

And though
Limbo sounds like heaven
Don’t open up the gate
Oblivion can wait

Juliet
Why don’t you try again
Don’t stop now
Juliet
I know
You can’t forget
Don’t stop now

VERSION 3

(The) Wonder of your hand
Warm with mercy feel (so)
Cold behind the glass
And the swirling fog (the)
Time goes by so fast
You’re dissolving as I catch a fading glimpse
Tangled in a thousand hints

And when will you forgive me

JULIET
I want to live again
Set me free
JULIET
I’m bound
Lower me down
Set me free

(A) Fragment of your voice
Picking up the sliver
Falling into place
Rearrange the pices
Trying to erase
Every new mosiac as the image forms
Penance overwhelmed by storms

And when will you forgive me

JULIET
I want to live again
Set me free
JULIET
I’m bound
Lower me down
Set me free

Sometime after I won the 2008 ISC, I was contacted by a composer in Europe who had some tracks and wanted me to write some lyrics.

It’s hard to write lyrics to pre-existing tracks but I gave it my best.

This song was entitled JULIET, so I wrote what I thought was really good. He wanted something different so I rewrote it. And rewrote it again. Wrote several lyrics for him and I was just not giving him what he wanted.

I am putting all three versions up, the first one is still the best, I think. I wish I could post the music, but even after all these years, I suspect he used it for something else.
