CONSTANT (2010)

(v1)

There’s a girl behind the counter pouring drinks
In a t-shirt almost close enough to touch
Life in the big city
Everyone displayed
A beguiling brigade
A carnal invitation
Celebration of temptation
Too damn much

(rise)

It’s constant as…..
Constant as….

Constant as the car alarm
That sounds at 2am and yanks you
From a dream you’ll never comprehend

Constant as the neon
Flashing amethyst and brimstone
While persuading you the night should never end

(chorus)

It’s just constant
Constant
I try to keep control
But don’t you understand it would be easier
To lose my wayward soul

(v2)

The air has an illicit summer scent
I’m tasting something potent on my lips
Spice in the big city
A lingering narcotic
Addictive and erotic
Desire’s persecution
Leaves traces of confusion
On my fingertips

(rise)

It’s constant as…
Constant as…

Constant as the murmur of
A fervent congregation as they
Pray for expiation of their sins

Constant as the current pulsing
Eagerly at sunset
To illuminate the night when it begins

(chorus)

It’s just constant
Constant
I try to keep control
But don’t you understand it would be easier
To lose my wayward soul

(bridge)

And I know that the air back home
Is nowhere this intoxicating
I know you’re there back home
Waiting
Waiting

to soothe me with the quiet of your arms
to stop my heart from running for the door
caress me with the splendor of your hair
and penetrate my core

(rise)

Your love is constant as….
Constant as….

Constant as a waterfall that
Never stops cascading as it
Thunders down and covers me with mist

Constant as a poem that has
Lasted several lifetimes
Giving love a hundred reasons to exist

(chorus)

It’s just constant
Constant
Love help me keep control
I know you understand it would be easier
To lose my wayward soul

Putting together some songs for a pitch, I contacted Josh, whom I had met in NYC the year before. Josh used to perform on the Lower East Side, and other NYC venues. He brought in Adam, an LA Film and TV composer.

The lyric came when I was hanging out on Saturday night on the Lower East Side with Seth Glier and his friends after a Rockwood Music Hall gig. The sense of sexual energy everywhere was overwhelming. At one point, Seth was trying to write a note to someone, looking for the end to "Your love is constant as....constant as...."

I couldn’t think of anything quickly enough, but I jotted the phrase down in my notebook and the whole thing blossomed into a lyric.
