SAME OLD LOVE SONG (2009)

I don’t know what you need
Sometimes
Looking over your jasmine tea
On the street
Out the window
Waiting for your cup to brew
Aching for some new
Mystery
While I’m singing that same old love song
Sung in my usual key

Don’t know why you stay
Sometimes
I’ve seen other guys come your way
Seen you change
Seen you brighten
Seen you Metamorphosize
Then your hesitant eyes
Turn my way
Just to see me sing you that same old love song.
Day after day after day,
I keep on singing that same old love song

I know you’re restless
Sometimes
But fireflies and fireworks fade
And I know you love me
Sometimes

I know you see my fear
Sometimes
I still try to hide it when we’re
At a club
And you’re dancing
Into a storm of changing light
In kaleidoscopes of glimmering light
I only sing that same old love song
Night after night after night
I keep on singing that same old love song
I keep on singing that same old love song
I keep on singing that same old love song

I was chatting with a young singer/songwriter in NYC, and he lamented that everytime he tried to write, he wrote the ’same old love song.’

This wasn’t what he was after, but I liked the title and got this thought out of my head. This is a real throwback romantic lyric.

The lyric is not one of my stronger ones, and has gone through a lot of permutations. But Ian has done his usual lovely setting of it.
